The Alex Stocking Crochet Pattern was originally released in December 2015 as a Super Bulky weight stocking. This year I have been revamping and updating a few of my stocking patterns and re-envisioned the Alex Stocking and am offering this version as a free crochet pattern for you. It has not only received an update stylistically, I used worsted weight yarn to really be able to mix and match designs across the different stocking patterns I have available. You can read about all of my crochet patterns HERE.

The Yarn

For this project I decided on using Yarnspirations Caron Cake in the colour Red Velvet. This yarn is a worsted weight medium #4 yarn that is available in 20 different shades, exclusively at Michaels. Each ball features five colours that have nice, long, colour changes. Although the one drawback of this yarn is that the colour changes are super abrupt, I was able to fudge the changes at the back of the stockings with minimal yarn waste. In fact, I made both stockings in the above photo using only one cake!

Features:

  • Content: 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool
  • Ball Size: 7.1 oz./ 200g , 383 yd. / 350 m
  • Care: Hand wash, lay flat to dry
  • Gauge: Medium Worsted (4)

  • This stocking is worked in one piece from the Toe to the Cuff.
  • Beginning chains do not count as a stitches throughout.
  • When choosing colors for your Stocking, Color A will be the Toe, Heel, and Cuff, and Color B will be the Foot and Leg. You may choose to use as many different colors as you like, but I will only refer to Colors A and B in the pattern. This stocking is worked in one piece from the Toe to the Cuff.
  • I recommend fastening off after each color. I will have the color you need to use at the beginning of the Round. If you do not see (A) or (B), then you will continue with the color used in the previous Round.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Using a long length of white yarn and a tapestry needle, weave in and out along the open gaps on the back of the stocking in an X pattern, making sure not to pull too tightly. Fasten off and weave in all ends. Use the photo below as for inspiration (stocking on the left). Alternatively, you can use the same color yarn and the stocking and just sew them closed for a simpler look.
